What is society telling us?

Dave and I got to talking about taking care of ourselves over this past week. We reminisced a lot about past habits and how we felt, how we feel now and how we've had to adjust things as we've grown older and further into our parenthood journey.

One thing we reflected on was this question…

“Why does taking care of ourselves feel so hard sometimes?”

I believe it's two reasons:

  1. Because LIFE. We all have a lot we're managing and it takes a lot of practice, setting boundaries and getting SUPER intentional about making time for the things that truly help us feel our best.

  2. Society. In reality, the picture we've been painted when it comes to self-care, taking care of ourselves, what that looks like, etc. has caused us an extra level of exhaustion, burnout, overwhelm and unlearning.

I created the below graphics as a visual - not only to help me see the difference between some of the things I've learned/been told versus what true wellness looks like, but also to share in hopes that it helps you reflect on your own health journey.

The bottom line…we are all learning and unlearning. We are all growing and failing forward. We are all in this never-ending process of trying to find the best solutions possible when it comes to our health.

Some things I've been asking myself lately…

  1. Where do I feel weak?

  2. Where do I need to/want to grow?

  3. Where do I need more help and direction?

  4. Am I staying mindful of the FULL/LONGTERM picture?

I encourage you to ask yourself these things. Or similar questions. Self-awareness is an incredible practice. It can really force you to get uncomfortable and evaluate on where you want to grow and move forward. I am SO proud of you for continuing to show up for yourself. Never forget that the effort you put into self-care matters in BIG, impactful ways.

Sending many wishes of love, laughter and health to you!
